In an odd twist of time, I've heard similar words mentioned in the fifties from a psychologist who read way to far into comicbooks and what they were "reportedly" doing to children across the country.
"They poison the mind and corrupt the morals of the young, who waste their time sitting on sofas immersed in dangerous fantasy worlds."
I can only give thanks to Paul Pope, who caught this in the an issue of the Economist.
