Cully Hamner hates Detroit and everyone in it.

And he doesn't care who knows.

Just kidding. Three weeks ago, Hamner posted the following message to the ComicBloc forums:

A few months back, I got a call from Motor City Comicon, asking me to come to their October show. Now, I've always liked MCCC, they've always treated me really well when I've gone; it's a nice show. Unfortunately, after all the shows I've done this year, I find that I've reached the burn-out point. I decided not too long ago that I'm gonna be scaling back on shows for the next year or so, because it's really cutting into my work schedule. I'll definitely do my mainstays, like Heroes and Baltimore and Atlanta, but beyond that I'll decide to go to on a case-by-case basis.

So, I tell them this, and that I really don't think I can do it. But because of my pleasant dealings with them in the past, I tell them I'll think about it, look at my schedule, and that they should call me back in a couple of days. Like I said, that was a couple of months ago, and I haven't heard from them since.

A few weeks ago, I got an e-mail from a fan wanting to know what I would be charging for sketches at MCCC. I told her that I was sorry but I wouldn't there, and that hopefully she could catch up with me next year. It seemed odd to me that she would assume that I'd be there, so I went and checked their website, and sure enough, I was listed as a guest as of August 24th.

I e-mailed the Motor City folks, and said that there must be some mistake. I'd never agreed to go, and really can't anyway, so would they please take me off the list? No response. To date I've sent three e-mails and haven't even gotten a response.

Leonard Kirk followed up with this eyebrow raiser:

Unfortunately, Motor City Comicon has a reputation for doing this and it's one of the reasons why I've never attended. I've spoken to a few pros whose names were added to the guest list "by mistake" only to have it announced by the con (usually on or just before the con date) that they "cancelled" their appearance.

I have to wonder if the organizers aren't doing this on purpose. I've seen it happen with other shows.

And sure enough, over on the Motor City Comic Con website, Hamner is listed as having "canceled" due to "Scheduling Dificulties [sic]"

Tsk, tsk.
