Come out alone.

Over at The Engine, Warren Ellis started up a little thread about his Heroes Con experiences. In it, he says:

I'm going to think very carefully before I do another US comics-only show. I seem to have passed the point where I can just disappear into the background.

And YMB spies at Heroes Con largely tell us this was true. At least on the con floor. After con hours, when it was time to get your freak on, was another story entirely. Ellis says:

I had no idea so many people were at the Westin, and had no way of getting there due to not knowing where it was and having a fucked-up leg.

(The Hilton staff gave me four different sets of directions to the convention center, all of which were wrong, so I wasn't about to let them direct me to the Westin.)

If Ellis was in such demand at the con itself, why didn't anyone think to bring him along to the Westin on Saturday night? I mean, the tubby old curmudgeon is always a barrel of laughs, right? He should've been good for a "shiteyes" remark to a stray, annoying, drunken fanboy. It seemed as if just about every pro who attended the con was at the Westin on Saturday night (want a glimpse? Click here to view Magic Twanger's excellent video showing lots of scenes of the Westin's lobby on Saturday night).

All except for Ellis. Who, earlier that night, was spotted sipping a cocktail and smoking a cigarette, all by his lonesome, in the lobby bar of his hotel. At about 9 or 10 pm or so, he was spotted retiring to his hotel room, alone.
